Today I learned that a fellow named Calvin Kasulke has crafted a five-part radio play around the beloved character of Banjo, the Man-Faced dog.
First appearing in the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the big-hearted rascal returned in the heartwarming 1979 spin-off “Make Way for Banjo.”
Calvin’s engrossing (and well-produced) audio saga involves a public radio reporter joining Banjo as the four-legged scamp searches for his wife in the aftermath of a cataclysmic natural disaster.
“I won’t let you eat this man. He’s a good dog.”
I am ri-goddamned-delighted by Calvin’s project. Anyone who can combine this kind of sustained effort with such a singular focus is a hero in my book.
You can find the episodes here, in easy-to-listen (and purchase!) form:

Thank you, Calvin, for this stirring reminder that even the power of the courage of a man-faced dog can inspire and remind others to become what the inner strength to achieve what the power of each of us, in our hearts, together with inspiration of even a man-faced dog, can accomplish as a reminder of what inspiration can, when within our hearts, from the love of man-faced dog.

Crap Hound Big Book of Unhappiness book signing, La Luz de Jesus/Wacko, December 7, 2018

Figuring it would be add a bit of excitement and fun for attendees of the book release event for The Crap Hound Big Book of Unhappiness, my friend Kyle McCulloch and I crafted materials for Black Metal Face Paint corner. Someone put me in touch with the marvelous and talented make-up artist Andrea Valdez, who sportingly agreed to fill the role of the enterprising owner of PHAYZEPAINDT.

I printed full-color flyers and business cards, a warning not to ask for KISS make-up, and a poster display helpfully offering visitors their choice of 71 grim designs. Andrea set up her table on one side of the art gallery of La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles, and I signed books on the other.

For three hours she painted children and adults alike, cheerful and professional as she ripped away their shallow conformity to reveal the savage darkness within. Thank you again, Andrea, for a lovely evening.

If anyone would like Andrea to facilitate their own Dark Journey, I enthusiastically recommend her services. You can contact her at andreavaldezmakeup.com.

My friend Steve Gerdes told me he’d come up with the phrase “Jesus is my face mask,” but didn’t have an image to go with it. I told him I’d see if I could come up with something. Head and arms were expertly modeled by my patient neighbor, Mr. K. Aguilar.
